The whole idea is to :

1. Promote different ways to lace shoes. Bring it in vogue (create demand for this service)
2. Distribute pictures of various lacing styles to the cobblers and shoe polish boys and train them so that they could meet the demand (ensure supply)

I looked down from my window and saw a cobbler on its way.I called him for his service.
While he was on his way upstairs, I asked my flatmate if he would like to get his shoes polished.
"I do it myself", he replied.
"If we will do it ourself, how will cobbler earn his livelihood?", I questioned.
He smiled and said sahi thinking hai dost.

Nothing else. With that, our conversation came to an end.I dont know what exactly he meant by "sahi thinking hai".May be he liked the idea but he is too lazy to act. May be he just dont care.
May be, something else.

Imagine how difficult it would be for a cobbler to meet his daily requirements and raise his family.

The Ping Pong show at the Patpong road

Just came back from a short but refreshing trip to Bangkok.
We decided not to plan much for our trip for we wanted some surprise element to be there.
[Well, to be true, we (soumya,simpu and me) were preoccupied with our passions(computer games, music and surfing) till last moment and hence had no time for planning]

When we arrived at suvarnabhumi airport, only thing we knew was that we have to reach HQ Hostel which is in silom road. We took a bus from airport which left us at soi 6. The place where we had decided to lodge is at 5 minutes walking distance from soi 6 bus stop.

silom is one of the most cosmopolitan streets of BKK and famous for its nightlife.Also famous for the patpong night market/shows.

On the very first day of our trip, we decided to explore the night market and ofcourse the shows!

At around 11 pm, when we entered the patpong street, a dalaal asked us if we would like to watch lady shows. When i asked what he meant by lady shows; he explained : banana show, ping pong show, f****** show and blahs. I knew what probably gonna happen in banana show but had no idea about the ping pong show. Duhh..what they gonna do with a ping pong ball??

Somehow he managed to evoke curiosity in us but we didnt wanted to take any risk. We wanted to have a feel of the market and take the entry ticket only after being preity sure that its safe to enter.

After spending another 5-10 minutes on the crowdy street; we were appraoched by another dalaal who offered us to enter free of cost and pay only if we like it. The only condition was that we will have to take a drink worth 100 baht. We decided to go for it!

It was dark inside. A waiter showed us our table with the torch light. We ordered for whisky and took a look around. The show began and the curiosity was shadowed by the setback. It was not at all appealing. We finished our drink in 5 minutes and decided to leave; but here comes the twist in the tale.

A waitress came to our table with a bill of 3900 baht!! It was not even a bill. Simply on a piece of paper she had written :

Watching show : 1000 Baht X 3 = 3000
Drinks : 300 Baht X 3 = 900

Total : 3900 Baht!

Thank you!

That was funny. I argued with her and she shouted at me. I said 300 and she replied 3900 baht. Although we could not communicate effectively because of communication gap, we negotiated for 10 long minutes. Soumya reminded me not to take any panga from localites..but well it would have been a foolish idea to shed 3900 baht for nothing at all!

The waitress asked us to move to the reception and talk with receptionist for the actual rate of drinks and the show. At reception,we were asked how much we can give. Ahh.. we were waiting for this question!
We gave 100 baht each and ran away.
The show disappointed us but the ping pong experience was worth 100 baht!

Wow! what a wonderfully carved movie!There are 3 things which separates 'Rock On!!' from other bollywood flix :
1. Perfect Editing by Deepa Bhatia
2. Onscreen performance of Farhan Akhtar & Arjun Rampal
3. Storyline!

Movie reminded me of times when I tried to 'Rock on'....:)
Once we had a band called VAAMPANTHI (V All Are Meniscure Precursors of Ataraxis And a Team of Hurbly-burly IITians) with me as a lyricist and Bhoju and Aashish as lead singers. We never needed any drummer or guitarist;sound editing softwares were enough for setting background scores..:D. We jammed together to come up with masterpiece like iit ki dhadkan, sf ke din and song of us.... :).
VAAMPANTHI became more than a band when vIx,Dheeru, KT, He-Man, Calee joined us. We had a group tshirt.. black tee with vaampanthi logo in saffron.Events like VOW(vaampanthi of the week) united us like never before but then we could not devote time and VAAMPANTHI died its natural death.
Calee is now working in Barclays;Aashish,Bhoju and KT in JLLM;He-Man in TVS,vIx in L&T, myself in Danieli and Dheeru is a wannabe IAS.
Don't know if we ever meet again, will we be comfortable in humming few lines of song of us ?

No Man's Land : Christiania

Christiania is altogether a different place!
A small world having its own definition of progress, prosperity & happiness. A balanced economy of around 850 residents, most of them perform arts of one kind or the other for their living.
When I went there, I found colors all around. Memories of those graffitis on wooden wall, wooden houses for skateboarding and christianians selling colorful souvenirs, are there to remain with me forever.

Christianians have succeeded in not letting their habitat be affected by external forces. You will experience the difference between Copenhagen (infact the rest of world) & christiania as soon as you enter this freetown of 34 acres.

Recently (Sadly), there has been increasing protest and conflicts in an around christiania.
Don't know what's the fate of this 'no man's land' but i hope it remains as it is and i get a chance to take my kids to this freetown.
I wish christianians all the best, in the struggle to retain their culture & prosper in their own choosen way!
Amen.

Bachna Ae Haseeno!

Seems quite promising. Yash Raj Banner, top chicks of bollywood(Bipasha,Lamba & Deepika) and the cutie Ranbir Kapoor, it has it all!
I just checked its music and now can bet that it will be one of the 3 biggest hit of 2008!

Bachna Ae Haseeno would have been the ideal launch pad for Ranbir, wondering what made him go for Saawaariya.I guess it was consistency of Sanjay L Bhansali to comeup with larger than life movies/epics that attracted Ranbir. But well , dismal performance of Saawaariya taught us all a lesson :
"No matter how consistent you have been in the past, if you are obsessed with something,it is always dangerous."
Coming back to Bachna Ae Haseeno, there are 7 songs out of which 4 are mind blowing (Khuda Jaane, Title Song, Khuda Jaane(revisited) & Aahista Aahista) and rest three are ok types.
Shooting of 'Khuda Jaane' song has been done in Greece, Venice and countryside of Italy.(Thank god Yashraj prod. took a break from shooting in UK,US nd Switzerland). Some beauties would be new to bollywood audience, especially canals of venice and romancing on gondola.

यूरोप आने के बाद snowfall देखने कि एक तमन्ना थी...जो जान्कोलाना जा के पूरी हुई.

जान्कोलाना पहुचने के बाद, ट्राली से हमलोग Skiing Zone गए...

स्नो कि परत ह्ल्की थी..कभी कभी घुठनो तक धस जाते थे..

Kshitij से सूरज कि किरने आ रही थी..
उछ्ल कुद और मस्ती के बाद याद आया कि जल्दी रवाना होना पडेगा नही तो बस छुट जाएगी.
बस stand पहुचकर जब हम बस का इंतजार कर रहे थे तो ठंढ से कांप रहे थे..शाम हो गई थी.

ठंढ भगाने के लिए हमे दौडे.. फ़ुटबाल खेले और Hot गपशप मारे.. १ घंटे बाद बस आ गई और हम उदीने के लिए रवाना हुए..

इंडिया हो या यूरोप, ये universal truth है कि : बस कभी time पे नही आती.

Our short term and long term goals remains volatile unless we dont pen it down!

Everyday we wake up and with that we unlock our senses to external environment. Right from our first move from our bed to bathroom to pick toothbrush, we start getting affected. Affected for better or worse ; from what we see, what we hear, what we touch, what we smell and what we taste.All of which affects our THINKING in short run and MINDSET in longer run.

And it totally becomes a personal decision, whether he or she wants to get ruled by his/her surrounding environment or want to be a ruler of his own desire (in shorter run)
and ruler of his fortune (in longer run)

Thinking over an A4 sheet makes your vision clear to yourself. Obviously most of us remain unfamiliar with what we want and spend most of our hours stumbling randomly. While thinking with a pen and paper in our hand, we should start with broad categories which makes our life meaningful.To mention few, it can be :Money, Glory,Entertainment, Health.. And then start drawing web relating one with the other answering questions like : What are your plans for earning more money?From where can you derive motivation? etc. Once you pen down all ur plans for those thing which makes your life meaningful, you will have a smile on your face and
you will be more confident than ever.

8 a.m. I opened my eyes with nothing in my mind.Left my bed for I was tired of sleeping.
9 a.m. When my girlfriend feels sick of me, she yells :"GO TO HELL!!!"
Well she dont know what hell is.None of you people do.Hell isnt getting beat up or clit up or hauled in front of some faggot jury. Hell is waking up every god damn morning and not knowing why you are even here.Why you are even breathing.
7:30 p.m. Whole day I kept watching Prison Break.If they gonna make Indian remake of PB, Sohail and Arbaaz Khan would be best alternative for Michael and Lincoln.whadya think guys?
After taking my dinner, I dressed myself for stepping out.I went outside the hospital premisis and then did some free walking.. ahmm.. ahmm.. like some background music is already there...chewing happydent ..taking deep breathes and free walking.

12:41 p.m. Tutto bene!! Everything is alright! Bronchoscopy was very simple.And now I am hungry.Have not eaten anything in last 18 hours.
3 p.m. I am loosing interest in watching movies.Infact no movies which are worth watching are left.
7 p.m. I am stuck up with prison break.8 episodes so far.Going pretty well.
10 p.m. Diary writing aint a fun thing.Not at all interesting.Nothing can match the fun of walking on lonely roads.Like this :

8:45 a.m.They are 'tasting' my blood!!!!.
Since morning they have taken 7-8 syringes of my blood and probably they found it
'tasty' and so will continue taking samples for their 'taste' in coming hours.
I called my mummy to get some consolation from her.While she was trying to console me, she herself was nervous.Aww you cute mummy..:-* .Moms are like that!!
9:00 a.m. Just now they took one more sample.eeeeeee!!!
7:00 p.m. Whole day they kept sucking my blood!!
10 samples!!
and tomorrow - bronchoscopy!!

12:45 a.m. Its too early to start a diary entry and too late for moving to bed.Should i go for a nite-out?I smiled at word 'out'.It gonna be a D day!Wether I can move out or not will be decided today!
Pink Floyd is doing magic on me.I am getting spellbounded..hypnotized..and now comfortably Numb..and finally feeling sleepy...ZzzzZzzz
10:30 a.m Not feeling well! Having loose motion!Breathing problem.No clue what should I do.:(
Doctor will come to visit me within half an hour.
6:00 p.m. I got to know about PCR test result.
Test result is negative... but.. but i will have to remain here for ..say another one week!
All of a sudden Doctor's professor came into picture and he adviced her to not let me go so easily..;) .I have got a hole in my lungs.Keeping in mind my xray report and the fact that I am an Indian (a country where Tuberclosis bacteria has adapted itself to many medicines),they have decided to do some severe tests(like putting a narrow pipe in my lungs to take the sample of sputum).
The good news is that now I can move outside my room with a mask!This evening, I went for a stroll and I saw sunset :)
So..my friends..this life is all about hopes.Hope drives us.High Hopes.Dead Hopes.New Hopes.
So my friends..finally..I will have to be here for atleast one more week.On the darker side :I will have to face bronchoscopy, on the brighter side: holiday for one more week!!

P.S.:Nokia N70!!! None of my friends went to Media World last weekend and so.......

10:30 a.m. Its my 7th day!! i.e. i am here since last 168 hours!!aww my gawd,one week has gone.I couldnt realise.I lived as if :

12 a.m. From somewhere I got the food for creativity today!After completing initial work for my forthcoming presentations: 'second thought' and 'Babasaheb Ambedkar', I tried my hands on 'Gimp' and here is what i came up with : 'cheguev-arya'.

10:30 a.m. Good news are coming up!!!
Everyday at 10 a.m. Doctor comes to discuss my situation with me.Day after tomorrow they will conduct PCR test on my sputum specimen.And by Monday evening,they will get the result.In best case, they will let me go to India for 3 weeks!!
These days, I am studying "Understanding Stocks".After finishing it, i will 'try' to read 'Davinci's Code'.

2 p.m. Reading is not my cup of tea.Gave up!
Long long time ago , I can still remember..how that music use to make me smile and i knew that if had more chance then i can make those people dance and may be they be happy for a while.
Whatever be the question,the answer is music!

10.a.m.Doctor told me that they will get the result of PCR test on Monday and they will take my blood test on Tuesday to examine the level of one of the prescribed medicine. If everything goes in my favour, i will be released in less than 1 week.Four new things have been added in my 'to do' list and they will be there for atleast 2 months:

10:30 a.m. I need a shower!! and I no more feel lonely.Afterall there are 'n' number of things to do being all alone and each single thing can be done in 'n' different ways.. Ahh. so n*n different ways of spending a day.Moreover when i think about people who spends years and years in koma,rishi/maharshi who spends decade doing tapasya and Ninja Kirigi who spent more than 100 years in loneliness,doing saadhna(for more info, read : Kirigi ka Kahar),I feel,I am in pretty well situation ;).
11:00 a.m. Just now a team of 5 doctors came to visit me.They have decided to start the treatment process.I will have to take 4 different type of Pills.3 antibiotics and 1 vitamin.
One of the antibiotic will change the colors of tears,urine..almost all secretions.I asked them if they are sure that I am having TB? They said,they are 'quite sure'.
For being 100% sure they will have to rely on results of culturing.Culturing of sputum takes 2 months.
But..on saturday you were supposed to get the result of sputum test.Right?I asked.
Doctor:Yes..probably we will have the result on saturday but anyway we will have to start the treatment process now.
I think they are qualified enough to decide how should they treat me and I think they will get no pleasure in making me stay here for long.
I am going to take a shower!!
11 p.m.The sputum test result is negative!!! Just now 2 doctors came to inform me.Negative result means that TB is not contageous but..
Yes,they want to perform one more test,PCR test for being 100% sure.! which will take about one week time!.So in best case , I will be released after a week!
I have decided to buy Nokia N70!By sunday evening,I will have it!

It's 9 a.m.
Everyday I get my breakfast around 8:15 a.m. and at 8:30 a.m., nurse comes for measuring my body temperature, blood pressure and heartbeat.Something interesting happened today morning.A nurse came and asked me : "fare in bagno per pu pu?" I got little idea about what she is asking about, but still..
Me: "Cosa e pu pu?"
Nurse:"fare in bagno per..." (and then she patted her butts) "chatt chatt"
Me: ha ha ha..si!:D
Today morning when I woke up,I was feeling unusual,lazy,weak.To get over this feeling,i jogged in my room.Now I am going to clear my backlogs of yesterday.
11 a.m. Time is moving at good pace.After a short spell of lazyness, i started working!Presently reading an ebook : "Understanding Stocks".Meanwhile I got to know from Doctor that my blood test was "OK" and my "sputum" test is going on.I will get to know the result on Saturday and then they will decide about my stay and treatment.
I personally feel that 'may be' I am having TB but its not the contageous one.I have my own reasons for thinking so.Anyways, medical science relies only on laboratory tests and I will have to keep patience.
10 a.m. 1st March, yesterday night, I was too lazy to complete my diary entry.I took heavy dinner: curd,pollo,salad,verdure,pane,pasta and then crashed on bed.Before sunset, i saw movie "After Sunset".Salma Hayek..mm.. I love her.!
I dreamt about yatching,Holi and then I cant remember the last dream I saw.I have got an ebook:The interpretation of dreams by sigmund freud but till now this ebook could not make an entry in my "to do" list.First,I have to complete "Understanding stocks" and then only can think of any other ebook.

This place is like prison infact worse than prison in few respects ;) .I cant move outside to breathe fresh air.I cannot meet fellow prisoners.Anyways,I dont want to bother myself by thinking about what I dont have and what I can't do.I have to keep myself happy and rocking and I know how to do that ;)
11:00 a.m. I got some more information about my health!
Doctor told me that it will take about a week time to be sure if I have contageous tuberclosis or non-contageous.Earlier this day,my blood sample was taken for the HIV,Hepatitis A,B test.I will get the result by today evening or by tomorrow morning.
Its 10 p.m. I am tuning myself to my environment.Pretty much successful in keeping myself away from the feeling of loneliness.As predicted,i could not do everything which i had scribbed in 'to do' list.Tomorrow I will get to know about Internet Connection.Still,I dont know for how long I will have to stay here.It gona be between 1 to 4 weeks.
I am feeling sleepy...

Imprisoned - DAY 1

26th February..At around 9 a.m. I got to know that I will have to spend next 2-3 weeks of mine in hospital.May be a month.I wont be able to go to India in last week of March.Ahh. all plans got cancelled.
By 12 p.m, I was in Hospital,in an isolated room.You can enter inside only with your mask on,but I cant move outside of the room.For atleast next 2-3 days,strictly not allowed to do that.Reason-test result for tuberclosis was +ve in my case and now I will have to undergo intensive treatment.
I informed Papa,Mummy and Meenal about the case.They strengthened my determination to enjoy this treatment period inspite of getting nervous.Still I am concerned about mummy,she would be worried.Moms are like that.
It's 6 p.m.I spent last 6 hours in quasi loneliness.Got checked up by Nurses frequently.Tomorrow I will be scanned for viruses.HIV,Hepatitis -A,B..
Facilities in this hospital are superb, only concern is loneliness.Lets see how i deal with it in coming days.I have my music pill,lappy,Italian learning book and some phone cards with myself.I am curious to know how I will spend my coming days.Some phone calls from friends were like lifeline.Nainy recommended me "Tuesdays with morrie"-by Mitch Albon. Meenal made me feel better with her sweet voice.Bhabhi made me smile and Bhaiya gave me strength.

Aawaaj : The Journey!

The love for writing, especially poems has something to do with hereditary in my case.Papa contributes to Dalit literature and baba,being a freedom fighter and associated with 'Arya Samaj' writes verses on 'desh prem' and society in general.

My saga for writing began at age of about 11 years when papa gave me a task of writing an essay on 'adhyayan'.He was more than happy to see a 10 page work by me.His compliments and motivation drove me thereafter.

After reading Papa's book: 'Kaaton ke bich',I realised that poems need not be beautified with alankar.All it needs is to have some content which can make long lasting impression.A poem should be capable of making a change,motivating junta,becoming a voice inspite of getting little applause for tukbandi and then getting lost in the mist of time.

To register my presence in the world of poetry, I sent my poems to Kshitij(a hindi quarterly published from US) ,Anubhuti-Hindi and started my own blog of Hindi poems : Aawaaj.
With Papa's help, my first book : 'Kshitij se aage' got published in August 2005.It was sweet surprise to get comments from Surendra Snigdh uncle and Ranjit uncle who are well known figures of Hindi literature of today.

Aawaaj is very much concerned with the plight of common man specially of those who suffers from social seclusion.Aawaaj is concerned with psychology of human being and is the mirror of the underground revolution which is going to change the social scenario of our nation.

Dalits, media and the solution

Yesterday,i showed a video clip made by me,on the present state of Dalits in our country, to my friend.The facts datas and images in my clip shocked him.He was living with the prejudice that cesteism is no more practiced in India and social/economic status of Dalits has been improved to a pretty well position by Indian Government.
No wonder he is unaware of the ground reality.Afterall, who cares to enlighten people about the social and economic diversity which is still prevailing in our country?
Media?Times of India?Hindustan Times?The Hindu?Aaj tak? Star News?
None!!!They have no interest in this case.Rather they will like to focus on what Abhishek Bachhan will wear on his wedding day.
English men know much more about the social situation of our country than we Indians.Shame on you Indian Media!!!
Why the hell our mainstream media has kept its eyes closed?
Why the hell only 'feel good' news about our country are publicised?
Does government has no interest in preparing responsible citizens having courage to pay back to society?
I appreciate the spirit of our country because of which we made rapid economic growth in last 10-15 years but like you, I too dont want to forget about the problems which our country is facing.
Rich getting richer and poor getting poorer,will it anyway let our country run on the path of progress?
25% of population suffers from social seclusion and deprived of basic amenities,will our country ever be called prosperous?

what can be done?

Reservations Some Questions and their Answers

Q: What is reservation?

The word reservation is a misnomer. The appropriate word for it used in the Indian constitution is Representation. It is not given to anyone in his individual capacity. It is given to individual as a representative of the underprivileged community. The beneficiaries of reservations are in turn expected to help their communities to come up.

Q: Why reservation?

The policy of reservations is being used as a strategy to overcome discrimination and act as a compensatory exercise. A large section of the society was historically denied right to property, education, business and civil rights because of the practice of untouchability. In order to compensate for the historical denial and have safeguards against discrimination, we have the reservation policy.

Q: Were Reservations incorporated by the founding fathers of the constitution only for first 10 years?

Only the political reservations (seats reserved in Loksabha, Vidhansabha, etc) were to be reserved for 10 years and the policy review was to be made after that. That is why after every 10 years the parliament extends political reservations.

The 10 year limit for reservations is not true for the reservations in education and employment. The reservations in educational institutions and in employment are never given extension as it is given for the political reservations.

Q: Why give reservations on basis of caste?

To answer this question we must first understand why the need for the reservations has arisen. The cause for the various types of disabilities that the underprivileged castes in India face / have faced, is the systemic historical subjugation of a massive magnitude based on caste system having a religious sanction. Therefore if the caste system was the prime cause of all the disabilities, injustice and inequalities that the Dalit-Bahujans suffered, then to overcome these disabilities the solution has to be designed on basis of caste only.

Q: Why not on basis of economic criterion?

Reservations should never be based on economic status for various reasons as follows:

1. The poverty prevailing among the Dalit-Bahujans has its genesis in the social-religious deprivations based on caste system. Therefore poverty is an effect and caste system a cause. The solution should strike at the cause and not the effect
2. An individual's Economic status can change. Low income may be taken to mean poverty. But the purchasing value of money, in India, depends upon caste. For example a Dalit can not buy a cup of tea even in some places.

3. Practical difficulties in proving economic status of individual to the state machinery are many. The weak may suffer.

4. In caste ridden India infested with rampant corruption, even for an unchangeable status like caste, the false "Caste Certificate" can be purchased. How much easier will it be to purchase a false "Income Certificate"? So income based reservation is impractical. It is no use arguing when both certificates can be bought, why caste only should form basis of reservation. It is certainly more difficult to buy a false caste certificate than a false income certificate.

5. Reservation is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end. The main aim is to achieve the active participation and sharing by the "socially excluded" humanity in all the fields of the affairs of the society. It is not panacea for all ills, neither it is permanent. It would be a temporary measure till such time the matrimonial advertisements in newspaper columns continue to contain the mention of caste.

Q: Should there be a creamy layer criterion or not?

The demand from anti-reservationists for introduction of creamy layer is ploy to scuttle the whole effectiveness of reservations. Even now out of all seats meant for SC/STs in IITs , 25-40 % seats remain vacant because it seems IITs do not find suitable candidates. Just imagine what would happen if by applying creamy layer criterion the SC/ST middle class, lower middle class people who are in position to take decent education are excluded from reservations benefit ! Will the poor among SC/STs be able to compete with these privileged students trained under Ramaiah and at various IIT-JEE training centers at Kota ?
Of course Not.
This will lead to 100 % seats in IITs for SC/STs going vacant.

Q: How long should the reservations continue?

The answer to this question lies with the anti-reservationists. It depends on how sincerely and effectively the policy makers which constitute privileged castes people in executive, judiciary and legislature, implement the reservations policy.
Is it just on part of privileged castes people who have enjoyed undeclared exclusive reservations for past 3000 years and continue to enjoy the same even in 21st century in all religious institutions and places of worship, to ask for the timelines for reservations policy?
Why do not they ask, how long the exclusive reservations for particular community in the religious institutions and places of worship are going to continue?
The people who have acquired disabilities due to inhuman subjugation for 3000 years will need substantial time to come over those disabilities. 50 years of affirmative action is nothing as compared to 3000 years of subjugation.

Q: Will not reservations affect the Merit?

As regards to how Merit is defined in a very narrow sense and what it actually means, following is the quote from an article by Prof Rahul Barman of IIT Kanpur.

Is merit all about passing exams? After all, are the exams a means or an end? If the exams are means to look for ability to make better engineers, doctors and managers, then can there be better methods to look for such ability? After all in my first engineering class I was told that a good engineer is the one who can produce the best out of the least resources and similarly, management is supposed to find ones way in an uncertain situation or allocate scarce resources in the most optimal way possible. If that is so, whatever I have seen of our deprived masses (of which overwhelming majority belongs to the backward, dalit castes or adivasis), they have the astonishing capacity to make something productive from almost next to nothing! For the last few years I have been studying small industry clusters, like Moradabad brass, Varanasi silk and Kanpur leather. Put together (all the clusters in the country), they are exporting more than the IT sector and their cumulative employment will be several times of the whole of IT industry. In all these clusters they operate with miniscule resources small investment, no electricity, forget about air-conditioning, non existent roads, lack of water, and little formal education. These clusters are primarily constituted of these so called backward/ dalit castes and are truly a tribute to the genius that our society is. But in spite of centuries of excellence these communities have hardly produced any formal engineers, doctors and managers, and conversely these elite institutions have not developed any linkages with such industries and their people.
Reservations of more than 60 % have existed in the 4 states of southern India and around 40 % in Maharashtra since last 50 years. On other hand in the north Indian states the 15 % privileged castes have been enjoying 77 % of the seats in educational institutions and in employment (assuming that 23 % reservations for SC/STs are totally filled, which is not the case). The World Bank study has found that all the 4 south Indian states are much ahead of north Indian states in terms of their human development index. It is a common knowledge that all the southern states and Maharashtra are much ahead in fields of education, health, industrial development, in implementing poverty alleviation schemes, etc. than the north Indian states. This shows that reservations have indeed helped the southern Indian states in making progress on various fronts. Whereas lack of adequate reservations is responsible for the lack of development in most of the north Indian states.

Q: Have existing reservations for SC/STs been effective or not?

The reservation policy in the public sector has benefited a lot of people. The Central government alone has 14 lakh employees. The proportion of Scheduled castes in class III and IV is well above the quota of 16 per cent and in class I and II, the proportion is around 812 per cent. So, the middle and the lower middle class that we see today from the Dalit community is because of reservation. With no reservation, the entry of these people in government services would have been doubtful.
The situation is similar in education. An article in the EPW (Economic and Political Weekly) estimates that there are seven lakh SC /ST students in higher education and about half of them are there because of reservation. Reservation has certainly helped but there are limitations in any policy with the way it is implemented.

Comics tell stories through a combination of both the pictorial and verbal formats. Their popularity comes from the fact that they are a powerful medium of story telling. Comics are often seen as trivial, as "something for children", and, of course, a big part of the mainstream comics sold today are just that. But comics, in a nutshell, are a visual form of storytelling, where texts and effects are added to extend meaning to the visual narrative.
Comics can perhaps be compared with a film that stops at intervals. What we see in the panels (boxes) of the comics is a still image from the story. What is outside the picture and what has happened between the two panels is left to the reader to imagine and fill out. They can be serious, funny, thought provoking entertaining and have an intrinsic energy of their own, they also have the power to stimulate, provoke and urge one to action. So far in India, this medium has been restricted to professional comics artists, who have used the techniques to express themselves in popular mainstream comics that deal with mythology, adventure or basic humour, eg Amar Chitrakatha, Lotpot, and the Indian reprints of Phantom, Tarzan, Superman, Spiderman, Tintin, Asterix etc.

Loneliness bites? nah..It just gives u an opportunity to understand yourself better.
I had that prejudice that loneliness bites and man is a social animal during my first week of stay in Goa.Travelling alone in a city where i have never been before was painful in the beginning but i started enjoying it soon.Copy,pen and books are friends who will never let loneliness bite you.Now i can spend years with food and these three friends all alone anywhere.Rather i will love to do that atleast once in my life.
